Beyond the Small Talk: The Evolution of Up the Hill Inc.

Beyond the Small Talk: The Evolution of Up the Hill Inc.

I was at a community BBQ in Neskonlith this week. It was one of those beautiful summer afternoons where the pace slows down, the food is good, and you really get to connect with the people around you.

I found myself in a conversation with a young woman from our band office. We started with the basics—how the families were, how the kids were doing, and what she was working on in the education sector. But as the conversation shifted to my work at Up the Hill Inc., I saw her interest sharpen.

I told her about where we are right now: the process of securing our NPNs (Natural Product Numbers) so we can step into major national retail stores. I shared our transition from small-batch beginnings to a scalable, clinical-grade production model, and our commitment to weaving ancestral Secwépemc plant wisdom into every bottle we produce.

She looked at me and said, "That is the most I’ve ever heard about your company and the work you’re actually doing."

That comment stuck with me.

As a founder, it is incredibly easy to get trapped in the "weeds." I spend my days focused on inventory logs, regulatory compliance, testing, and production infrastructure. My head is so deep in the how that I often forget to share the why.

If I’m being honest, I’ve always been more comfortable being the person behind the scenes. I prefer getting the work done over being the face of the brand. I’m not a fan of self-photos.

But I’ve realized that Up the Hill Inc. is more than just products. It’s a bridge. It’s a bridge between the traditional knowledge of my ancestors and the rigorous, science-backed standards of modern clinical herbalism. That story belongs in the light.

So, I’ve decided to make a change. I bought a selfie stick—yes, really!—and I am committing to showing more of the process. I want you to see the creating, the building, and the genuine effort that goes into every ritual mist, candle, and balm.

Building this company is deeply rewarding. Whether it’s welcoming a new wholesale client, navigating the complex steps of national retail, or simply refining a formula, it is a privilege to build this for our community.

Thank you to that young woman at the BBQ for the reminder. Your work in education is inspiring, and you’ve reminded me that my own work is worth talking about, too.

Stay tuned. There is a lot more building to do, and I’m ready to share it with you.
