The 5 Best Herbs to Support Respiratory & Immune Health This Fall

Rooted in the rhythms of the land.

Every fall, when the wind shifts and the leaves begin to let go, the land whispers a reminder: it’s time to slow down, listen, and prepare.

At Up the Hill Inc., we believe healing begins with rhythm—and the land is our teacher. In Secwepemc tradition, fall is a sacred season of transition. It’s when we gather, reflect, and strengthen our bodies for the colder months ahead.

This year, we’re turning to five powerful herbs that grow in the Thompson-Okanagan region—each one offering support for respiratory and immune health, naturally and respectfully.

1. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Yarrow is the quiet guardian of the meadows. With its feathery leaves and clusters of white flowers, it’s known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Brewed into tea or used in steam, yarrow helps soothe coughs, fevers, and congestion—making it a fall essential.

2. Wild Rose Hips (Rosa spp.)

After the petals fall, the bright red hips remain—packed with vitamin C and antioxidants. Rose hips support immune resilience and can be simmered into syrups or steeped into teas. They’re nature’s way of saying, “You’re held.”

3. Goldenrod (Solidago spp.)

Often mistaken for ragweed, goldenrod is actually a gentle ally. It supports the respiratory system, eases seasonal allergies, and helps flush out toxins. Found in dry fields and forest edges, it’s a golden thread in fall’s healing tapestry.

4. Pine Needles (Pinus spp.)

Yes—those fragrant needles! Rich in vitamin C and flavonoids, pine needle tea has long been used to support lung health and immunity. The aroma alone feels like a breath of fresh mountain air.

5. Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Nettle is a powerhouse of minerals and vitamins. It nourishes the blood, reduces inflammation, and gently supports the immune system. Harvested with care (and gloves!), it’s a grounding herb for seasonal transitions.

🧡 A Ritual of Respect

These herbs aren’t just remedies—they’re relationships. When we harvest with intention, prepare with gratitude, and share with care, we’re not just boosting our health—we’re deepening our connection to the land.

Because healing isn’t just about what we take—it’s about how we live.
