At Up the Hill Inc., we believe the land holds stories. Not just the kind you read in books—but the kind you feel in your bones. The kind that rise up from pine trees, the rocks and plants, and drift across the grasslands, and settle into the quiet of fall.
This season, we invite you to slow down with us. To listen. To remember. To gather—not objects, but moments. And to share them in circle, as we have done for generations.
We’ve created a free downloadable ritual called
“Stories of the Land: A Secwepemc-Inspired Fall Activity.”
It’s gentle, earth-based, and designed for families who want to honor the season in a way that’s respectful, non-extractive, and rooted in Indigenous teachings.
What It Is
This is not a scavenger hunt.
It’s a finding walk—a quiet invitation to notice what the land is offering.
It’s a storytelling ritual—a chance to gather in circle and share what you saw, felt, and remembered.
It’s a way to teach children that the land is alive, and that we are part of its story.
What You’ll Do
- Walk slowly on the land—your backyard, a trail, a patch of grass
- Find signs of seasonal change: a red leaf, a resting tree, a stone that has a story
- Record what you find through drawing, writing, or memory
- Gather in circle and share your stories
- Close with gratitude and a promise to care for the land
Why It Matters
In Secwepemc culture, the land is a teacher.
Fall is a time to listen. To let go. To prepare.
This ritual helps families, communities and students reconnect with those rhythms—without taking anything from the ecosystem.
It’s simple. It’s sacred. And it’s something you can return to year after year and season after season.
