Body, Heart, Mind, Spiritual and Sacred Spaces Cleansing

Some people use sage, sweetgrass or cedar or they might pray, meditate, write, or exercise to cleanse their bodies, hearts, mind, spirit  and sacred spaces of negative energies or toxins.  Personally, I do all of these and I find all of them very helpful.

In this day and age, it is very important to stop and to take the time to rid ourselves, our bodies and our sacred spaces of toxins from the negative energies that may surround us day in and day out.  If you spend most of your day away from the sanctuary of your home like most people do, you will likely be exposed to the negative energies from people, or your surroundings.

In my opinion, when these energies are not cleansed from me and my surroundings on a regular basis they will begin to have a negative affect on my life.  I may find that I become more susceptible to illness, or accidents.  My mood and relationships become negatively affected. I may find  that even though I have set the best intentions for my activities, they may not turn out as planned.  If you find these things are happening in your life, it is time to do a body, heart, mind, spirit and sacred space cleanse.

These following herbs have been used by Indigenous people for thousands of years to rid the body, heart, mind, spirit and sacred spaces of negative, unwanted energies that may have been sent by others, or created by self.

Sage: the sweet fragrance will lift the spirits and clear the mind. It helps to clear your spaces of negative energies as well. This is a great herb to turn to when you need that extra lift.

Cedar: has been used as a cleansing herb for millennia by Indigenous people. It will help to clear your body, heart, mind, spiritual realm and sacred spaces.

Sweetgrass: is another herb that has been used by Indigenous people for thousands of years. Use this herb to cleanse your heart, body, mind, spirit and sacred spaces.

When I smudge my home and my body, heart, mind and spirit I say a prayer to set the stage for the cleanse.

I give thanks to Tqelt Kukpi7 (Creator of all things) for the melámen (medicines) to do this cleanse.  I place my sacred sage blend into the shell and light it to create smoke.  I continue to pray and give thanks to the Creator for me, my k̓wséltkten (relatives) and ren tsitstcw (my home) and tmícw (land).  I ask the Creator to cleanse my heart, mind, body, spirit and sacred spaces.   I then use my hands to wash the smoke over my body as if it were water.  In this way I am cleansing my heart, mind, body and spirit.  You may do your smudge different, and that is ok. We each have our own methods of taking care of ourselves.
